Know anything about student rail passes?

I heard you can buy a train ticket to travel on European trains for a month or two. A friend had the bright idea to travel on trains at night, and then spend the day in any place (or vice versa) so you do not have to pay for accommodation. We would love travel to Czechoslovakia … Was wondering if anyone of you has a great experience or ideas?

Thinking about Europass. Unfortunately, it seems that the Republic Czech is a sort of main line, and you would have to show separately in Eastern Europe or separate passwords Czech Republic and Austria to come and go through of Austria-Hungary or any country that starts (link changed to go to the password of "youth", valid for 26-and-unders.)
