Travel To Italy

Travelling around Italy for 3 weeks and keep people in homes or staying in convents?
I am a U.S. citizen in my 50 years and want to spend 3-6 weeks in Italy. Therefore, I want to stay with residents in their homes or, possibly, in convents. I know that these spaces are available but not Internet know where to look in there. I am also interested in making contact (prior to my arrival) with local residents in the communities where I travel. Does anyone have suggestions for web sites? I'm not looking for a situation born – only new friends. Thanks for your help.
